Preface
Although the so-called
Trumpet Voluntary
is hugely popular these days and mostly heard at various important celebra
–
tions, affairs of state and as a standard at wedding ceremonies all over the world, it has a unique story of irony and over
–
sights. Many misconceptions have been part of this piece’s history. From true author, to original title and to initial form of
instrument choice, all were mixed up at a certain point in time or simply blurred from the beginning. For many decades
in the 20th century it was known – and
still
is known today to some misinformed commentators – as „Purcell’s Trumpet
Voluntary”, while it is neither Purcell’s work, nor originally entitled as such.
