Preface
Many composers approach their final years having written at least a few pieces that have nosatisfactory place in the canon of their lifetime’s work, often because of their slight nature. Hubert Parry appreciated this, and in 1914 began to compile a suite for strings from manysources, including movements that may have been intended for Lady Radnor’s Suite of 1894,although most were reasonably contemporary. Parry had often used the suite as a vehicle for agroup of loosely connected or even unrelated pieces – the Twelve Short Pieces for violin andthe Shulbrede Tunes for piano being notable examples – and the lack of a unifying theme oridea did not deter him.He intended the new suite as a gift for Emily Daymond, a former pupil who acted as hisamanuensis in later life, and existing drafts call it “E‘s Suite”…
