Sergey Lyapunov was born between two generations of celebrated Russian composers whose names have eclipsed his
own. He grew up in the shadow of Balakirev, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin, and Tchaikovsky. By the time of
Lyapunov’s death, Alexander Scriabin and Sergey Rachmaninov had overshadowed him. Throughout his life Lyapunov
was drawn to the nationalist music of his predecessors. As he aged this folk-song influenced style became unfashionable.
After the 1917 Russian Revolution musical tastes turned to the harsher, dissonant styles of Sergey Prokofiev and Dmitri
Shostakovich and Lyapunov’s richly Romantic music was forgotten until more recent years.
Lyapunov entered the Moscow Conservatory in 1878. There he studied composition with Sergey Taneyev and piano with
Karl Klindworth. After graduating in 1883 Lyapunov moved to St. Petersburg to be near Balakirev, whose music he al-
ready admired. Lyapunov became a member of Balakirev’s circle and received much encouragement from the older man,
though Balakirev could be domineering in his relationships. Nevertheless, the faithful Lyapunov completed Balakirev’s
Second Piano Concerto in E-flat after the death of the older composer in 1910….
