Anders Johan Ture Rangström was one of the members of a new generation of Swedish composers in the twentieth century credited with introducing modernism into their musical language. In addition to being a foremost composer of symphonic works, operas, songs, chamber music, and piano compositions, Rangström also worked as a conductor, music critic, and voice teacher. By developing a new musical language that honors its heritage yet furthers a distinctive national style, Rangström’s music and his contributions to the Swedish culture prove to be some of the most significant treasures in this nation’s classical music.

Born in Stockholm on 30 November 1884, Rangström cultivated music at an early age. In his late teens, he began composing the first of his nearly 300 songs, sixty of which he orchestrated. During these formidable years, one of his first teachers encouraged him to explore new harmonies. Whole-heartedly taking this advice, Rangström composed emotionally charged music that earned him the nickname “Sturm-und-Drangström.” …
