Heures d’après-midi / Très doucement for voice and orchestra (Performance Score)

(Paris, 12 February 1886 – Brussels, 20 September 1960)

Heures d’après-midi (1910)
Très doucement (1915?)

This score is published for the occasion of the hundredth birthday of the death of the author and art critic Emile Verhaeren (1855-1916): on 27 November 1916 Verhaeren died in a tragic train accident in the station of Rouen.

His poems were (and still are) very beloved among composers, this is especially true for his collection of love poems, Les heures claires (1896), dedicated to his wife, Marthe Massin. Because of this, there’s a very long list of composers who have put his poems to music. Among the Belgian composers: Raymond Baervoets, Michel Brusselmans, Jules Toussaint De Sutter, Jeroen D’Hoe, Irene Fuerison, Albert Huybrechts, Joseph Jongen, Vic Nees, Willem Pelemans, Leopold Samuel, Maurice Schoemaker, Jan Van Landeghem and Ernest Van Nieuwenhove. Many foreign composers also found his poetry inspiring, among them: Nadia Boulanger, Henry Defosse, Jacques de la Presle, Philipp Jarnach and Raoul Pugno.

Michel Brusselmans, who, just like Verhaeren, spent part of his career in Paris, did not only compose music to two poems by Verhaeren, but also composed the symphonic poem Hélène de Sparte, to Verhaeren’s 1912 play of the same name.
This piece was awarded the Prix Agniez in 1914.

Michel Brusselmans
(Parijs, 12 februari 1886 – Brussel, 20 september 1960)

Heures d’après-midi (1910)
