“I compose in the character of folk music. I deliberately do not say ‘in the style of’, as that implies something contrived or artificial, whereas ‘character’ refers to something inherent, something that is there from the outset. The mere use of folk material by no means guarantees an authentic realisation of folk character; it naturally contributes to this, inevitably, when done in the spirit of the people.”
