Concert Suite for violin and orchestra Op. 28 (Piano Reduction/Solo)
The Concert Suite for Violin and Orchestra, op. 28, was composed in 1909 during the final flowering of Taneyev’s compositional career. His only work for violin and orchestra, it was immediately accepted into the catalogue of Kussevitzky’s newly founded Editions Russes de Musique, which promptly issued it in both full score and piano reduction as Suite de Concert pour violon et orchestre en cinq parties, op. 28 (Berlin and Moscow, 1910). Although not as well-known as some of his other orchestral works (notably its predecessor, the Symphony No. 4 in C minor, op. 12), it has served as the subject of a separate monograph (by M. I. Fikhtengolts, 1963) and was ardently championed by David Oistrakh, who issued it twice on disk, once conducted by Jean Martinon and again by Nikolai Malko. Other notable performers include Christian Altenburger and especially the Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto, who has recorded it with Vladimir Ashkenazy. The Concert Suite also exists in a version for cello.
