ozef Schampaert studied at the Royal Conservatoires of Brussels and, after a break because of World War I, of Antwerp. From 1923 to 1926 he also took private lessons with composer and conductor Flor Alpaerts.

Schampaert was especially active as a music educator. He was director and teacher at the music school in Willebroek (1929-1960) and harmony teacher at the Antwerp Conservatoire (1942-1964). In 1955 he also published Small harmony theory, a didactic work that can be used for self-study purposes. From 1953 to 1960 he led the Willebroek concert association ‘Friends of the Music School’, conducting symphonic concerts.

Furthermore, Schampaert was a prolific composer. In little more than half a century he composed 29 orchestral works, 19 works for small ensemble, 21 solo works, nine choral works, 29 songs, a cantata for children, a children’s ballet, a suite of eight children’s songs and an opera, in addition to numerous arrangements and exam pieces. …
