Hans Heiling: A Romantic Opera in Three Acts together with a Prelude, emerged through an anonymous communiqué of the librettist. Marschner began the composition in July 1831 and completed it on August 14, 1832. The first performance (Berlin, Royal Opera House, 14 May 1833) was well received by the audience, although the critics were somewhat reserved, in contrast to the Leipzig performance some weeks later conducted by the composer. As a result of good reviews, Marschner received an honorary doctorate from the University of Leipzig.
