Dvorák, Antonín

Te Deum Op. 103 (Vocal Score)

In the autumn of 1891, Antonín Dvorák accepted the position of Director of the National Conservatory in New York to begin the following autumn. In May 1892 in Vysoká he began the orchestration of his Mass in D major, op. 86. In mid-June he was asked by Jeannette Thurber, his future employer at the National Conservatory, to compose a cantata befitting the celebration that October of the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. A suitable text for the work was to be sent to him in Vysoká. Rather than waiting for the text, Dvorák went to work using the text of the Latin hymn Te Deum Laudamus, which he set in less than a week between June 25 and June 30, 1892. He completed the score between August 2nd and August 28th while still in Vysoká. In fact, neither the Te Deum which Dvorák had expected to be premièred at the celebration on October 12 nor the cantata The American Flag that was requested by his new employer was performed that evening, as Dvorák had not yet finished the cantata. However, just nine days later on October 21, 1892 the Te Deum was first performed at New York’s Music Hall in a concert of works by Dvorák, with Dvorák himself conducting and a 250-member choir.

Dvorák’s publisher Simrock did not want to publish the Te Deum, and only did so when Dvorák tied the rights to his Cello Concerto to it. Like the latter work, the Te Deum was published in 1896 by N. Simrock, Berlin, at which time the original opus number 93 was changed to 103. In 1969 the Te Deum, op. 103, appeared in a new critical edition based on the composer’s manuscript, edited by Frantisek Bartos, in Vol. II/6 of the complete edition of Dvorák’s works published by Editio Supraphon (Artia Prag). This study score is an exact reprint of the edition found in the afforementioned complete edition of Dvorák’s works.
