Preface
Mozart was enthusiastic about the genre opera. He wrote: “Every time I think about writing an opera, I feel my body burning and trembling from head to toe.” At the age of eleven, he composed the three-act musical drama Apollo et Hyacinthus, a setting of a Latin text based on Ovid’s Metamorphoses, which premiered on May 13, 1767, in the auditorium of the University of Salzburg. Mozart celebrated his first major success with a “real” opera at the age of 14. During a long trip to Italy with his family, when he was able to experience the Italian style firsthand, he received commissions for serious operas in the language of his host country. This led to Mozart’s first full-length opera, Mitridate, re di Pontos, for the Teatro Regio Ducal in Milan. It was an opera seria in three acts with a libretto by Vittorio Amedeo Cigna-Santi based on a text by Giuseppe Parini, which was inspired by Jean Racine. Premiered on December 26, 1770, the musical tragedy about an ancient king who tests the loyalty of his sons became a true triumph with 21 performances in the first series alone. At every performance, the audience shouted to the composer: “Long live the little maestro!”…
