Preface
Grzegorz Fitelberg was born into a Jewish family in what is now the city of Daugavpils, Latvia. While he was still very young the family moved to Warsaw, making Fitelberg a Pole by adoption, not birth. His new homeland nevertheless provided the throughline to Fitelberg’s personal life and professional career. Fitelberg attended the Warsaw Conservatory from 1891-1896, studying violin with Stanisław Barcewicz (1858-1929) and composition with Zygmunt Noskowski (1846-1909). After leaving the Conservatory, Fitelberg became a violinist at the Grand Theater of Warsaw, then, from 1901-1904, joined the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. In the following season, 1904-05, Fitelberg first led the orchestra as a conductor. The stage was set for the rest of his career.

A few years earlier, Fitelberg met Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937), a fellow student of Noskowski, in 1901. The two musicians, alongside Ludomir Różycki (1883-1953), and Apolinary Szeluto (1884-1966) formed the group known as Młoda Polska or “Young Poland,” to promote the creation and dissemination of Polish music. Fitelberg put his new passion for conducting to use in both Warsaw and Berlin, conducting concerts of Young Poland compositions on 6 February and 30 March 1906, respectively….
