Georg Schumann was the second of twelve cbildren bom to Clemens Schumann, the music director of the town of Konigstein in Saxony. He received bis basic musical training from bis father, playing among the first violins in the town orchestra from the age of nine. He leamed to play the organ from bis grandfather, the town’s principal church music director, and, following the latter’s death, took charge of the church’s musical services at the age of twelve. In 1881 he made bis fìrst public appearance as a pianist, playing a sonata from bis own pen. This drew the attention of Carl Reinecke (1824-1910), and he emolled at Leipzig Conservatory, …
