Preface
Ludomir Różycki was born on September 18, 1883, in Warsaw, Congress Poland. He started his musical career at an early age under the instruction of his father, Aleksander Różycki, who was a pianist, composer, and professor at the Warsaw Music Institute. His musical education continued at the Warsaw Conservatory, where Zygmunt Noskowski and Aleksander Michałowski were his teachers, followed by taking lessons in composition with Engelbert Humperdinck (best known for the opera Hansel and Gretel) at the Academy of Arts in Berlin from 1904 through 1907.
On February 26, 1904, Różycki made his debut as a composer with Stańczyk, a symphonic scherzo being premiered by the Warsaw Philharmonic and conducted by Emil Młynarski. Gaining confidence in his musical talent Różycki spent most of his summers and holidays composing. In 1905, he helped establish the Young Poland movement, a group designed to promote the new Polish music abroad, with members he met on summer holidays, such as Stefan Żeromski, Tadeusz Miciński, Stanisław Przybyszewski, and Mieczysław Karłowicz.
