Preface
The conductor and composer Gustav Strube was born in Ballenstedt in the Harz Mountains in 1867. Coming from a musical family, Strube was exposed to music at an early age. Thanks to his musical talent, he was already playing in his father’s orchestra at the age of 10 and attended the Leipzig Conservatory at 16. Here he studied violin with Adolph Brodsky and Friedrich Hermann, composition with Salomon Jadassohn and Carl Reinecke, and piano with Alois Reckendorf. To earn a living, the young man played at dance events on weekends. Later, he graduated from the conservatory in Mannheim, a city with a rich orchestral tradition, where he would work as a violin teacher for many years. After completing his studies, he also joined the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, which was conducted by Johann Strauss II (son).
In 1889, Gustav Strube and conductor Artur Nikisch emigrated to the United States to play violin in the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 1900, Strube joined the first violin section of the Boston orchestra, later becoming its concertmaster and assistant conductor. From 1913, he taught theory and conducting at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, where he served as director from 1916 to 1946. From 1916, he was the founding conductor of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He remained in this position until 1930. Strube was one of the first conductors of the Boston Pops, a symphony orchestra dedicated primarily to light classical and popular music, which was founded due to the success of the “March Master” John Philip Sousa. He also promoted Delta Omicron, an international professional music fraternity whose mission was to promote excellence in music and musicality. …
