Preface
Willy Burkhard was born in Leubringen/Evilard in the canton of Bern, Switzerland, on 17 April 1900. From 1916 to 1920 he attended a seminar for teachers in Muristalden near Bern, and he studied music first with Ernst Graf in Bern followed by Robert Teichmüller and Sigfrid Karg-Elert in Leipzig, Walter Courvoisier in Munich, and Max d’ Ollone in Paris. In 1924 he returned to Bern where he taught music, first privately and from 1928 at the Bern Conservatoire, while also conducting choirs and chamber orchestras. In 1933, a serious medical condition meant Burkhard would have to spend nearly a decade in resorts in Montana and Davos to receive treatments. After recovering, he moved to Zurich in 1942, where he taught theory and composition at the Conservatoire until 1955. His students included Klaus Huber and Rudolf Kelteborn.
