Joseph-Hector Fiocco
(Brussel, 1703-1741)
Missa Sanctae Caecilia
(1732)

Zie verder Tantum ergo (B Br Mus Ms 2982), Festiva lux (B Br Mus Ms 1399) en Tandem fulget (B Br Mus Ms 1631).

Partitura Del Kyrie Eleyson Et Gloria
Partitura Credo

Purcell heeft een Ode for St. Cecilia’s Day gecomponeerd. In 1692 schreef hij de hymne Hail! Bright Cecilia.

Meerstemmige ordinariumdelen: Kyrie, Gloria & Credo.
Bezetting: 5 Voci & 5 Instrumenti (strijkers) cum Ripieno & Basso continuo (Organo).
Toonaard: A-dur.

Gloria in excelsis deo, et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis.

Mijne Heren,
Uw zeer nederige
en zeer onderdanige dienaar en onderdaan
Joseph Hector Fiocco

(Brussels,1703-1741)
(1732)
Composer – life and work
Pietro Antonio Fiocco (the father of Joseph-Hector) was born in Venice in 1654. Around 1680 he relocated to Amsterdam, and after a spell in Hannover he settled down forever in Brussels, where he married Jeanne de Laetere on 22 October 1682. This union resulted in four children; the second one, Jean-Joseph, later became a famous musician. After the death of Pietro Antonio Fiocco's first wife, he contracted a second marriage with Francisca Deudon. Joseph-Hector Fiocco stems from this marriage.
Joseph-Hector was born in Brussels on 20 January 1703 as the eighth son of Pietro Antonio Fiocco (1654-1714) and as half-brother of Jean-Joseph (1686-1746). In 1725 Joseph-Hector was registered as a violinist at the orchestra of the duke in Brussels. He served as vice-Kapellmeister, pushed by his half-brother, probably between 1728 and 1731. In 1731 he settles down in Antwerp with his wife Maria Dujardin. From 1731 to 1737 he served as choral conductor of Our Lady's Church in Antwerp. On 16 March 1737 he resigned at Antwerp Cathedral with a view to succeeding Petrus Hercules Bréhy as choral conductor at the collegiate church of St Michael's and St Gudule's in Brussels, until his death in 1741. His activities ranged across a wide gamut: he was a composer, organist, harpsichordist, violinist, instrument builder, while concurrently teaching Greek and Latin.
Of Fiocco's oeuvre 28 works are preserved in the library of the Brussels conservatory,1 among them 22 motets, all of them in manuscripts by copyists. The Royal Library holds 4 motets. Whether there are autographs among them, has not yet been firmly established. Sacra trophaea,2 formerly believed to be lost, has been rediscovered. The motet Tantum ergo, attributed to "Hector Fiocco", is included in a hand-written collection of Charles Joseph Van Helmont that was unknown until recently, and has been preserved in Brussels since 1992.3 St Martin's church in Kortrijk (Courtrai) possesses at least one motet by Fiocco; of a second motet entitled Laudate Dominum the authorship has not been
1 Listed under the numbers B Bc 33 780 through 33 806, and a separate number 33 823.
2 Sacra trophaea, B Br Mus Ms 1428. In Christiane Stellfeld's pioneering monograph this motet was mentioned
among the lost works. See Les Fiocco: une Famille de Musiciens belges aux XVVe et XVIIIe Siècles / Christiane Stellfeld, in Koninklijke Belgische Academie: Klasse der Schone Kunsten: Verhandelingen: Tweede reeks: Boek VII, 4, Brussel: Koninklijke Belgische Academie, 1941, p.97. Furthermore, nr. 6, Confitebor tibi., was preserved not only in Paris, but also in B Bc under inventory number 33788. See moreover Tantum ergo (B Br Mus Ms 2982), Festiva lux (B Br Mus MS 1399) and Tandem fulget (B Br Mus MS 1631). All this to complete the oeuvre catalogue by Stellfeld. The authorship of a 5-part motet, Laudate Dominum (B K St M muziek 154) remains questionable. As mentioned on the RISM CD-Rom, the author is dentified as Joseph-Hector Fiocco only in the case of a second motet, Homo quidam, which is included in the same manuscript collection. For these additions to Fiocco's oeuvre catalogue by Christiane Stellfeld, see also: introdution to the score edition of Fiocco's Beatus vir by Sabine Goethals (1999).
3 Brussels, Royal Library, Mus. Ms 2982, fol. 336-341. Dated manuscript. See in this respect the manuscript deposited by Gilbert Huybens: periodical Musica Antiqua, vol. 10/1 (February 1993), p.24-25.
indubitably proven. Moreover both works are incomplete. The Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris also holds two motets; however, they are not unknown repertoire. Furthermore at least 6 motets cannot be traced. Fiocco also wrote at least 9 Mass compositions, among them Masses for St Cecilia and one Requiem Mass, both from his Antwerp period. They are now preserved in the library of the Royal Conservatory Antwerp. The three Lamentations for Holy Week are splendid works emulating François Couperin's Leçons des ténèbres (1714). In turn Fiocco's work was apparently emulated by the Leçons des ténèbres of Michel Corrette (1709-1795). As an aspiring composer Fiocco also wrote profane music in his early years; of his instrumental music the Pièces de clavecin from 1730-1731, printed in Brussels by Jean Laurent Krafft, deserves pride of place.4
Jan Bernard Vanden Boom, canon at the Brussels main church, was the first to compile a thematic catalogue of the oeuvre of Joseph-Hector Fiocco; he had a list of the works by Fiocco which he owned.5 On 8 September 1736 Jan Bernard Vanden Boom (1688-1769) was elected as successor of cantor Jacob Albert Knopf. "Especially after Fiocco had taken up his position (as choral conductor) and had introduced the Italian music style did (cantor) Vanden Boom reveal himself as a genuine Maecenas of music life in the Brussels main church."6 Canon Van den Boom also laid the foundation of what is now called the "Fonds Sint-Goedele" (St Gudule's Fund). Apparently he only took the trouble to compile such a thematic catalogue for the oeuvre of Joseph-Hector Fiocco, assisted by Charles Joseph Van Helmont (1715-1790) who succeeded Fiocco in 1741. In all likelihood this list was compiled during the decade after Fiocco's death.
Source and copy consulted
The Missa Sanctae Caeciliae by Joseph-Hector Fiocco for 5 vocal parts and 5 instruments is preserved as a manuscript in the library of the Royal Conservatory Antwerp (shelf location: AP-KC: MM-KA- FIOCC-missasa-19; AP University College, Department of Drama, Music and Dance). The manuscript originally belonged to the Antwerp Cathedral archives and has been preserved in good condition. Unclear whether it is an autograph or a copy, the manuscript consists of 2 scores and 17 parts (voice books). For the present edition this copy from the conservatory library has been used.
The Missa Sanctae Caeciliae consists of three important parts of the ordinary: Kyrie, Gloria and Credo. The work can be found in two score books (full scores): the former with the Kyrie and Gloria, the latter with the Credo. Followed by a set of 17 separate voice books each time mentioning the title and the part in question.
4 Further information in RISM, Einzeldrücke vor 1800. The conservatory library of Brussels also holds F 860 as well as F 862, though the latter is not listed. On the other hand the mention of F 861 is to be deleted. Cf. Sabine Goethals, op. cit.

The differences between the transcripts of the respective parts and the full scores are rather minor ones indeed; only a few inaccuracies can be established. Both score manuscripts reveal a similar classification and distribution of the respective parts: on top the instrumental strength, underneath the vocal parts, and at the bottom the Organo (et Contrabasso) part. Mostly the respective parts are recognizable through the ancient use of clef. The difference between the Basso viola part and the Violoncello part is not always perfectly clear. The individual voice books clarify the questionable passages.
In the Partitura of the Kyrie and Gloria the pages 1 through 39 were numbered in ink; the uneven page numbers are in the upper right-hand corner, the even ones in the upper left-hand corner. The pages 40 through the end (=82) were not numbered. The page numbers in the Partitura of the Credo were each time added in pencil in the upper right-hand corner, from 1 through 63 (recto/verso numbering). Only the uneven page numbers were mentioned in this case. In the remaining voice books (vocal and instrumental) the pages or folios are unnumbered.
The title pages of the two comprehensive scores mention the year 1732. The dedication in the Organo voice book was dated: 29. 9bre 1732 (29 November 1732); i.e. 7 days after the feast of St Cecilia (22 November) in 1732. Fiocco's Missa Sanctae Caeciliae originated during the period when Fiocco was associated with Our Lady's Church (Cathedral) in Antwerp (1731-1737); witness also the dedication in the Organo voice book. After his tenure at Antwerp Cathedral he relocated to St Gudule's in Brussels (1737-1741). His duties at these churches probably resulted in a preponderance of sacred compositions for these institutions.
Title page of the Missa Sanctae Caeciliae (1732) by Joseph-Hector Fiocco (Organo voice book)
The table below provides some basic information about the manuscript. The mentions between square brackets in the column "Title/headline" are found on top of the first lettered page of the manuscript (voice books). The other mentions are found on the decorated label by E. Hillens on the cover of each voice book. For the text of the title page and the dedication in the Organo voice book, see below. The mention "da J.H.Fiocco 1732" was added to the label of the Organo voice book.

The Missa Sanctae Caeciliae by J.-H. Fiocco (1732)
St Cecilia was initially one of the seven so-called primary saints, i.e. those included in the first Roman canon.7 All of them were women who lived in Italy between 200 and 400 after Christ and died a martyr's death under the persecutions of Christians. St Cecilia has been venerated as a martyr since the 5th century. However, her association with music emerges only in the early 15th century. According to tradition Cecilia stemmed from a distinguished Roman family. In her "saint's life" she is described as a well-educated Roman girl of quality who decides already as a nubile to dedicate her life to one being only: God. However, she is given in marriage by her family to the young pagan patrician Valerius. During her wedding feast, rejecting the sounds of revelry, she addresses herself to God, imploring him to let her keep her virginity during her wedding night. Valerius converts to Christianity, respecting her virginity. Valerius' brother Tiburtius, too, converts. The three of them are tortured and condemned to death around 230 during a new wave of persecutions of Christians.
After having been venerated for more than one thousand years as an 'ordinary' saint, Cecilia became the patron saint of (church) music, musicians and instrument builders. The most prevailing opinion today has it that the link with music is based on an erroneous interpretation of an antiphon from vespers for Cecilia's feast day. The antiphon in question puts it as follows: "Cantantibus organis Caecilia virgo in corde suo soli domino decentabat dicens fiat domine cor meum et corpus meum immaculatum ut non confundar" (While the instruments (the organ) resounded, Cecilia sang in her heart for the Lord only, saying: "Lord, may my heart and my body remain unblemished so as to save me from shame"). This sentence means that she clamours to her only refuge: God, even though she is surrounded by festive music (with songs and instruments). She is determined to turn away from the music, the profane entertainment. Later this Latin sentence was shortened to: "While the instruments resounded, Cecilia sang for the Lord." The word "organis" could also be translated as "organ". Thus originated the definitive image of Cecilia accompanying herself on the organ while singing to the Lord. Ironically enough, it was precisely the saint who turned away from music who was dubbed patron saint of music!
J.-H. Fiocco's Mass bears the name of St Cecilia. Her saint's day is celebrated on 22 November. Adding lustre to Mass with music on the feast day of St Cecilia was a wide-spread tradition in the

Collegiate churches of the Low Countries, going back at least to the sixteenth century. In the seventeenth and eighteenth century musicians liked to celebrate the feast of their patron saint with suitable lustre. Georg Friedrich Händel composed on the occasion of her name-day the cantata Ode for St Cecilia's Day. Henry Purcell, too, composed an Ode for St Cecilia's Day as well as writing the hymn Hail! Bright Cecilia in 1692. Joseph Haydn also wrote a Mass for this saint.
The patrons or the sponsors of the musicians often took care of a financial reward and/or a treat after the performance. For his Cecilia Mass composed in 1732 Joseph-Hector Fiocco received a fee of 10 pistoles. In his dedication he flatters the canons as follows: "This work belongs to you, Gentlemen (...) You love the music, and you know all its beauties." From 1733 to 1736 he diplomatically invites the canons every year to attend this Cecilia Mass at 8:30, while also obtaining the consent to execute again his newly composed Mass (probably the one from 1732), which was owned by the canons. For each performance the music chapel was paid 24 guilders, as usual. Apparently this Mass was afterwards also known at the Brussels St Gudule. The list with musical items by Fiocco, owned by Vanden Boom, music lover and cantor of this collegiate church, includes a "Messe Solenel" in A with 13 parts, starting with the same incipit.8
The most distinctive characteristic of Joseph-Hector Fiocco's Missa Sanctae Caecilia is its five-part disposition. The title page of the Organo voice book makes this five-part concept perfectly clear: â 5
Voc:
& 5 Instr:
cum Rips. Five vocal parts (Canto primo, Canto secundo, Alto, Tenore and Basso)
distributed across eight voice books: the Alto, Tenore and Basso part have two voice books each. Thus the ripieno principle is clearly expressed, as also mentioned in the description of the strength from the Organo voice book: Alto primo, Tenore primo and Basso primo: soloist parts; Alto secundo, Tenore secundo and Basso secundo: tutti parts. In the Organo voice book the instrumental accompaniment is also presented as five-part. The instrumental parts are distributed among nine voice books: there are two voice books for each Violino primo and Violino secundo part, plus Violino terzo, Alto viola, Basso viola, Violoncello and Organo (Probably the Basso continuo part in the Partitura Del Kyrie Eleyson Et Gloria was later specified as "Organo et Contra Basso").
Remarkably enough, the instrumental strength consists exclusively of strings (winds are absent). The presence of a third violin part helps to balance descant and bass instruments. Within the strings the Violino terzo can manifest itself in different ways: as an independent part in its own right (rather exceptional), as doubling of the first or second violin part, as doubling of the viola part, as doubling of one of both vocal descant voices. Also in the other instrumental parts the numerous doublings with the vocal voices are conspicuous. Thus we notice in choral passages, for example, a close connection between the Basso viola part and the vocal Basso part. The ripieno practice in the choral parts is also clearly noticeable between the Basso Viola and the Violoncello.
On the title page of the Organo voice book the specification “â 5 Voc: & 5 Instr: cum Rips” has been added to the mention of the strength "cum Rip". In the 18th century ‘ripieno’ is an indication relating to musical execution. In the baroque period ripieno refers to the full body of the ensemble (instrumental and/or vocal) and all tutti passages played with multiple strength. With ripieno it is therefore made clear that all instruments (and vocalists) have to perform in tutti, in contrast to the
8 Eugeen Schreurs: op. cit.
passages executed by soloists. The ‘ripieno voices’ are the orchestral parts and the sung parts in a piece of music that contrast with the solo voices (vocal and/or instrumental). The ‘ripienists’ are the instrumentalists or singers without a solo task. The materials for the voices of Fiocco's Cecilia Mass boast two voice books for the vocal Alto, Tenore and Basso part. In contrast to the equivalent first voice book, the second voice book of each part shows rests at different spots in the choral passages. This results in an interaction with a concerto effect between the full body and a small group (tutti – soli). This ripieno practice can also be found when we compare the different bass parts (Basso viola – Violoncello – Organo (et Contrabasso)).
The ripieno technique in Fiocco's Cecilia Mass is schematically clarified in the table below.

As stated above Fiocco wrote his Cecilia Mass during his stay at the Antwerp Cathedral. In the 18th century the choir master of Our Lady's Church in Antwerp was responsible for the education and coaching of the chorale singers. Until 1729 the boys' choir allegedly consisted of six orphan boys. Subsequently the orphans were replaced by middle class boys. From 1719 eight adult singers were active (all known by their names); the instrumental ensemble, conducted also by the choir master, consisted of about six members. For the execution of new compositions the choir master was allowed to hire two to three independent musicians as well. When applying this rather small strength (according to our present norms) to Fiocco's Missa Sanctae Caeciliae from 1732, a quasi one-to-a- part approach to this work is not inconceivable. From this vantage point the ripieno voices Alto secundo, Tenore secundo and Basso secundo contrast with the solo voices Alto primo, Tenore primo and Basso primo.
The stylistic features of the Missa Sanctae Caeciliae can be summarized as follows:
Genre: (short) Mass. Part-sung pieces of the ordinary: Kyrie, Gloria & Credo.
Strength: 5 Voci & 5 Instrumenti (strings) cum Ripieno & Basso continuo (Organo)
Key: A major
The style of Fiocco's Cecilia Mass is clearly Italianizing. Innovative elegant and mannerist traits appear: preponderantly transparent and homophonic voice leadings, abundant with decorative motifs.
No outspoken soloist use of the instruments due to the regularly recurring doubling of the singing voices.
Ornaments: mostly indicated by the symbol +. Often this is a very general indication of an ornament (in accordance with "le bon goût"); sometimes this sign is called cadence (cadenza/cadence) or trille (trill, shake); most often it is a trill, sometimes a mordent.
Here and there some dynamic indications occur. The indications forte and piano are mainly used with a view to supporting the balance between the vocal soloists and the instruments: at the attacks of the vocalists the instruments play piano; when the vocal voice(s) is/are silent during instrumental interludes the instruments play forte.
Both the Gloria and the Credo conclude with a final fugue. Both parts ("Cum sancto spiritu" in the Gloria and "Et viam venturi" in the Credo) are built on the same thematic material. This explains to a certain extent the stylistic affinity between both parts of the Mass.
Critical apparatus
Principles and general considerations
In this critical apparatus we use the letter denotations of tones and modes.
Specific remarks in connection with the manuscript and the editorial adaptations are noted in a footnote at the bottom of the page of the respective score versions.
The basis for the present transcript has been provided by the two original scores. Extra information from the voice books has been added between square brackets (e.g.: the numbers and basso continuo indications put between brackets derive from the Organo voice book). Whenever the texts underlying the vocal parts were borrowed from the voice materials, they are italicized.
Editorial interventions and choices have always been clearly marked as such.

Joseph-Hector Fiocco
(Brüssel, 1703-1741)
Missa Sanctae Caeciliae
(1732)
