Ulpiu Vlad
(b. Zărneşti, 27 January 1945)
Preface
“The essence of music is more important than the form in which it presents itself to the listeners” says Ulpiu Vlad regarding his aleatoric technique of writing. Although the connection between the rigorousness of composition and interpretive freedom has been preoccupying him since the ‘70s - the beginning of his creative career -, his music goes through a series of stages in which he experiments with various techniques (serial-modal language, texture, sound clouds, micro-intervals and folkloric improvisation). Ulpiu Vlad begins to write in an epoch where contemporary music was searching for complexity, while a parallel – and opposite – avant-garde named aleatoric music, became more and more popular. The composer’s personal evolution is similar to the historical evolution from integral serialism to aleatoricism, starting from complex scores, with mathematical and very demanding rhythms for the performer and gradually reaching the need to simplify his language, involving the performer more and more in the creative act.
If the score is written in a complex manner, then “the performer is overwhelmed by the text and cannot access the universe of music. But it can be written in a way that ignites their creative instinct. Thus music is updated and perfected. By relieving the performers from the difficulties of thoroughly following the highly complex musical text, one encourages their ease, in order to escape the burden of exaggerated study. There are scores that can be rehearsed for half a year and during a concert you will still think of the technical aspect.”
Ulpiu Vlad tells us a meaningful story involving him and a less open violinist towards the aleatoric aspect of “free” music. Instead of an approximate notation of what he had to play, the violinist asked for a passage with real notes. So the composer added to the score a transcription of the aleatoric version played by the performer himself. Of course, the sequence of heights and carefully noted rhythms looked as if it could only be played after long calculations and days of study, and thus they had to return to the aleatoric version. The point of the story is that they reached such a free writing “from the necessity to go further. (…) The audience is interested in what they hear, the essence of music. In every epoch, composers looked for solutions to make this natural for players, like breathing itself. Performers, if they’re free, they instinctively and spontaneously create something beautiful”.
Ulpiu Vlad developed a personal system of notation, planned in detail, with suggestive images, accurately explained (such as the ribbons with different widths, that can indicate the changing of the sonic density), a language he perfected especially in the ‘90s, when he started to work regularly with the German ensemble Partita Radicale. According to Liviu Dănceanu (Romanian composer and musicologist) he accomplished what in Romanian musicology is considered as being one of the most innovative systems of writing in contemporary music, which combines strictness with the adaptability of performing. The score allows an infinite number of interpretations, without the music being written incoherently. “In fact, I don’t offer performers that much freedom, but, as it happens in general with preconceived ideas, when one starts labelling something, comments keep on amplifying. “Selective determination” is an important direction for me and I can’t foresee returning to classical writing. It’s not about improvisation and even less about haphazard, but about spontaneous creation. I write determined music as much as it’s necessary to have support and expressive force in any vocal and instrumental formula.

After his education as an oboe player at the Bucharest Conservatory, Ulpiu Vlad focused his attention on composition, studying with Anatol Vieru (1964-1971). In the ‘70s, he researched folklore, in the ‘80s he worked as an editor and then director for the Musical Publishing House of the Union of Composers and Musicologists and in the beginning of the ‘90s he started teaching sight-reading at the National University of Music Bucharest. Since 2006 his name is tied to the Union of Composers, where he was appointed vice-president. Between 2013-2019 he was the President of the Romanian International Section of the International Society for Contemporary Music.
The sound of his compositions was perceived as a version of oneiric music, especially because of the cycles of pieces on themes like the dream (since ’72, but especially since the ‘90s), on resonance (since 2002) and light. This is where an entire philosophy of the dream world becomes apparent, with “floating” sonorities, in a music guided by structural contrasts, but devoid of any strong tensions and with affinities for the higher register. Folkloric elements are subtly assimilated and can be intuited in the melodic lines and improvising passages.
But perhaps the concept most strongly associated with Ulpiu Vlad’s name is that of “composition classes” (starting from Aurel Stroe), that is a series of works derived from one structure. The most relevant opus in this sense is Mozaic, a chamber-vocal-symphonic piece. Here, everything was calculated in such a way that the piece can be played regardless of the available ensemble of instrumentalists – so it has an open form. But because in general the substance and consistency of the piece is thought to remain constant for any combination of instruments, it creates a perfect situation where the composer doesn’t depend or isn’t limited by a fixed musical formation.

REVERBERAȚII DE LEGENDĂ (Legendary Reverberations) draws upon a number of highly specific compositional structures, occurring in succession and blending tensely throughout the opus. Tone matter includes the whole chromatic scale, emphasizing distinct modal structures, in the way of promoting certain dispositions of sounds, streamlined as options of pitch.
The system governing the work’s elements at their most essential level operates between poetic-melodic constituents, and those bearing the dynamic movement dimension. It presents performers with an opportunity to exhibit their technical and expressive abilities. Musical time takes on a particular position, shaped up in a closed, saturated form, conveying interior peace in the wake of suggestive accumulations. A feature of significance for this opus is that it can be played in a single complete performance, as well as segmented – the three different pieces can be presented individually or in combinations of two. Each performance, in any disposition, has its own meaning and is considered complete.
‘Legendary Reverberations’ finds itself among the opuses which highlight expression. A continuation of the tradition of melody is easily discernable, bestowing a sense of beauty upon the sounding canvas. I believe in a music that resembles nature and, as the divine creation, is governed by infinitely nuanced laws, applied equally to the entire opus as well as to its most intricate components, thus shaping its soul, modeling its energy. Melody pervades all individual categories of the work’s syntax and their mixed stances, bringing about a nuanced sound color which expands between the complementary directions of complexity and sublimation, while following the natural flow of music.
