Roland Coryn - Riflessioni per contrabbasso e pianoforte
(1994)
(Kortrijk, 1938)
Roland Coryn contributed a couple of special pieces to the repertoire for double bass, both solo and with piano accompaniment: ‘Thoughts’ on a theme for contrabass solo (1979), Riflessioni per contrabbasso e pianoforte (1994) and Elephantasia for contrabass solo (2001; Repertoire Explorer, no 2579).
Coryn composed Riflessioni per contrabbasso e pianoforte at the request of Frank Coppieters, who had recorded his ‘Thoughts’ on a theme for contrabass solo around that time (René Gailly CD 86006, 1994). With Riflessioni Coryn wanted to write a work in which an orchestral instrument such as the double bass acts as an equal partner to the piano.
The composer wrote the following about this work:
‘[Riflessioni] consists of a thoughtful theme, followed by seven reflections or considerations. This form is my approach of the variation form. It means that the reflections or variations are not directly based on a harmonious pattern that can be found in the subject; every variation has a completely different character and at times some reflections move far away from the subject. Even though this composition was written at the request of Frank Coppieters, a double bass professor for graduating students at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent, this composition is not focused on virtuosity, but conceived as a chamber music work that demands first and foremost musical mastery and expressiveness from its performers. In addition, I have tried to create a musical arc that stretches through the entire work, from the ‘soggetto’ to the ‘postlude’. This is a way of composing that I love, namely to start off with silence and then at the end, after many musical adventures, return to this silence. I also want to ask the performers not to take too much time in between the reflections, so as not to lose the attention of the audience.’
In the first reflection, with a jazzy rhythm as the foundation, the double bass and piano take turns, whereas in the second reflection the instruments are virtually independent of one another: the piano plays a monotone rhythmic pattern (‘indifferente ma armonioso’), while the double bass is passionate and melodious, yet still they find each other in a pianissimo in the end. In the third movement the composer left out all bar lines, allowing both soloists to slightly break free from the score. The fourth reflection is based on the same material but in the opposite direction, allowing for a climax. The fifth part (‘un po’ dolente’) creates a contrast with what came before: while the piano begins a downward lamenting movement, the double bass develops a melody reflecting this lamenting thought. The sixth reflection, composed in scherzo style, ends in a final movement that refers to previous reflections. These reminiscences are combined with the lament in the fifth reflection, creating a gradual transition to the postlude.
A CD recording of this work was made by the brothers David (double bass) and Erik (piano) Desimpelaere (Reflections on a song: Belgian chamber music for double bass and piano – In Flanders’ Fields, vol. 79, Phaedra 92079, 2014).

Roland Coryn - Riflessioni per contrabbasso e pianoforte
(1994)
(Kortrijk, 1938)
ers‘ Fields, vol. 79, Phaedra 92079, 2014).
Dauer: 13‘25“.

Roland Coryn (Kortrijk, 1938) - Riflessioni per contrabbasso e pianoforte (1994)
79, Phaedra 92079, 2014).
