Roland Coryn - Sonata per due Pianoforte, opus 25 (1981)
(Kortrijk, 1938)
The wish to write a voluminous piece for two pianos came to me after attending a live performance by the couple Levente Kende and Heidi Hendrickx during a television recording that took place at the Aula of the meeting centre Het Spoor in Harelbeke. Their perfect ensemble, clear sound and intense playing fascinated me to such an extent that, without asking them whether they were interested, I composed this sonata and sent it to them. Apparently they liked it, because, in addition to recording it, they have included it in their concert programmes on multiple occasions. I therefore would like to express my appreciation.
As well as content, form has always been of utmost importance to me. When it came to form, the five sections to express my story were the starting point. I had two main parts in mind, part II (the scherzo) and part IV (the variations). Between these two main parts a strong contrast had to play a role. This became the interlude Monochromie, in which an ostinato and the corresponding phrasing draw the attention, as opposed to the dynamics, which is the case in part II and IV. I tried to suggest the character by the indication of tempo of this rather peculiar part: ‘A tempo giusto, senza sfumature e quasi indifferente’. To introduce the piece as a whole, I added the prologue and to conclude an epilogue, in order to musically construct a logical discourse. Whereas the prologue starts off imposingly in fortissimo, the epilogue ends pianissimo, dreamy and silent, in memory of what came before.
Obviously, musical unity was the principal thing for me. It can be found in a series that I continue in all five parts. What I create with this series, I will leave to those who want to study the work more profoundly. However, I did try to insert a musical logic on the one hand and a dynamic contrast on the other to keep the music interesting.
It is therefore with great pleasure that I dedicate this work to these two magnificent musicians who have performed and spread this sonata.

Roland Coryn - Sonata per due Pianoforte, op. 25 (1981)
(Kortrijk, 1938)
