»Cyprès et Lauriers«
Fantaisie pour Orgue et Orchestre op. 156 (1919)

Vorwort

Preface
Camille Saint-Saëns composed Cyprès et Lauriers (Cypresses and Laurels) in March 1919 during a period of convalescence in the Algerian town of Hammam R’hira, in order to celebrate the victory of the Allies in the First World War. The work is dedicated to the French president Raymond Poincaré (1860-1934). In August of 1919 Saint-Saëns himself produced the transcription for two pianos of what the composer called a “Morceau de Circonstance”, arranged in a well-tried bipartition (slow, solo — fast, with orchestra).
Cyprès et Lauriers made its triumphal premiere on 11 July 1919 in the Ostende Casino with Saint-Saëns as solo organist under the direction of Léon Jehin (1853-1928), who had commissioned the work and in those days was director of the Concerts d’Ostende, having previously been a conductor in Monte Carlo. On 24 October 1920 it received a similarly celebrated second performance, this time with Eugène Gigout (1844-1925) at the organ, accompanied by the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire under Camille Saint-Saëns. A. Noty wrote concerning this performance in Le Courrier musical, artistique et littéraire du littoral: "An unpublished work for organ and orchestra from Monsieur Saint-Saëns was presented to us, […] of which the first part in D minor for solo organ was well interpreted by Monsieur Gigout. The second part is a dialogue with the orchestra; here was demonstrated the wonderful tone-world and harmonic opulence of Monsieur Saint-Saëns, who has opened up a space for a magnificent, clear and superbly built fugue. The national anthem breaks through in pure and noble contours; the victory appears in the key of triumph, D major. This work will always endure as one of the most impressive of its kind."
The orchestral score of Cyprès et Lauriers appeared in print in November 1919 through the publisher Durand, while the parts followed in January of 1920.
