Source: According to the book Judith, Old Testament
Place: The action takes place in and before the (H)Ebrean city Bethulien
Duration: approx. 90’
1. Act: The city Bethulien is besieged by Assyrian soldiers. The hebrean people, at the end of their strength, starved and shortly before dying of thirst, can no longer withstand the enemy’s troops and want to surrender. The masses hope for the mercy of the enemy and want to storm the gates. Osias, the chief priest of Bethulien, tries to appease the angry and exhausted people and encourage them to persevere. Judith emerges, angered by the lack of courage and weak faith of the people. She asks for delay, „still wait until the next dawn”. After some resistance, the crowd agrees. Ready to save her people, Judith plans to kill the enemy Captain Holofernes during his intercourse. “The way to my deed goes through sin! Thank you, thank you, Lord! May I love my honour, my immaculate body more than you? You made me beautiful, now I know why”. With great determination she prepares her deed. She has her maid Abra dress her up and wrap her in beautiful robes and leaves Bethulien to meet Captain Holofernes, who is known as the particularly cruel. Judith: “I will avenge the dead and shelter the living.“
Act 2: In the tent of Holofernes, an envoy of Mesopotamia offers Holofernes submission and asks for mercy. After some hesitation it is granted to him. Then a captain enters and announces the arrival of Judith: “Lord, a hebrean woman whom we have picked up on the mountain, is asking for you.... If she were not so beautiful, I would not have led her to you”. Because the captain had dared to approach Judith, Holofernes kills him on the spot. Then Judith enters the tent. She throws herself on her knees before Holofernes and reports cunningly that God wants to punish her people because of his sinners and that he, Holofernes, should therefore take over his rule. “Because I know that our God wants to turn over my people to you.” Holofernes feels flattered, he has a richly decorated table be brought, while dancers enter. Then he carries Judith, who is struggling with contradictory feelings, into his bedroom. After the intercourse, she seizes the opportunity and beheads the defenseless tyrant. With the sword in one hand and the head of Holofernes in the other, she asks Abra: „Rush into the city and proclaim to my people: Let the shout of joy sound and the sound of cymbals and timpani! Holofernes is dead!“ The Assyrians flee without a leader. But Judith cannot celebrate her return to Bethulien. She begs the people to have mercy and kill her. “I will not bear Holofernes a son.” Since the Bethulians refuse, Judith reaches for the dagger “I’ll do it myself.”
Preface
Emil Nikolaus von Reznicek was a very productive and crafty composer, a connoisseur of theatre who was able to pull out all the stops in his works with verve and elegance. Richard Strauss, contemporary and friend of Reznicek, is said to have mentioned about him “Reznicek can do more than all of us”. Today his works have largely disappeared from the repertoire, and only his overture from the opera Donna Diana is still known to music lovers. In addition to numerous symphonic works and chamber music, Reznicek created 25 stage works, including dramatic music, operettas, ballets and a total of 11 operas.
Born on 4 May 1860 in Vienna, Reznicek came from a wealthy family; his mother’s came from a Romanian princely family, his father was born in a family of musicians with Bohemian roots. Although a career as a lawyer and diplomat was originally intended for him, he asserted himself and completed his music studies at the Leipzig Conservatory with Carl Reinecke and Salomon Jadassohn in 1882. As a theatre kapellmeister in Graz, Zurich, Jena, Stettin, Bochum, Mainz and Berlin, he had the opportunity to get familiar with the requirements of the stage. Several years followed in Prague, where the premiere of his opera Donna Diana took place in 1894, his breakthrough as a composer. With the performance of his opera Ritter Blaubart in 1920 Reznicek achieved another great success. In the same year he took over an honorary professorship for instrumentation at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin and first became a member, later senator of the Prussian Academy of Arts.
Born in Vienna and later a „Berliner“ by choice, he was a dazzling personality, a bon vivant who could compose lightly, for some too lightly. In spite of his partly left-liberal opinions, the use of jazz music in his compositions, which was strictly frowned upon in the Nazi state and the fact that his wife was of Jewish descent, he made a career in the 1930s, took over various offices, was involved in the organisation of international music festivals and concerts and received public recognition from the Nazi state: in 1935 it were the Goethe Medal and the Brahms Medal, in 1936 Hitler appointed him professor, in 1940 both Hitler and Goebels congratulated him on his 80th birthday. And this despite the fact that, thanks to his position, he had made use of many freedoms and promoted both ostracized composers and new music. Since he hardly composed after 1935, he did not have the embarrassment to have to write homage works to the Nazi regime.
Emil Nikolaus von Reznicek died in summer 1945, shortly after the end of the war, at the age of 85 in the Prussian capital.
Reznicek dedicated his opera Holofernes to the bass baritone Michael Bohnen, who had taken over the title role at the premiere on 27 October 1923 in the Städtische Oper in Berlin-Charlottenburg, today’s Deutsche Oper. The original title was Judith and Holofernes, but the singer’s fame had led von Reznicek to rename the opera. Michael Bohnen was one of the first great German singers to achieve international fame. He was regarded as an unpredictable “diva” and turned the preparations for the performance into an obstacle race. But the success at the premiere proved him right once more, and he convinced not only by his singing, but also by his acting talent. The conductor was Leo Blech. After more than 20 performances the opera disappeared from the repertoire. Only 93 years later, in 2016, it was resumed in Bonn.
The biblical story of Judith and Holofernes from the Old Testament has inspired the imagination and creativity of many artists and composers over the centuries. From Botticceli and Michelangelo to Rubens and Rembrandt to Gustav Klimt and Max Ernst - they have all been imbued in their pictures, often even several times, by the revenge of the beautiful Judith. The compositions on the topic are also numerous. Scarlatti, Vivaldi, Mozart, Honegger and Matthus, to name only the most famous composers, have written oratorios and operas about the Judith motif. And of course Reznicek.
Hebbel’s drama consists of four acts, but the composer has shortened it to two acts in which he concentrates on his two main characters and their interaction. He starts the action in Hebbel’s third act with the siege of Bethulia and Judith’s revenge plan. Thus Judith stands even more clearly in the foreground than with Hebbel. On the other hand, the way in which he creates the protagonist is based on Hebbel: “I cannot use the Judith from the Bible. There Judith is a widow who lures Holofernes into the trap by ruse and cunning; she rejoices when she has his head in the bag and sings and cheers before and with the Israelites for three moons. That is mean; such a person is not at all worthy of her success [...]. My Judith is paralysed by her deed; she freezes facing the possibility of giving birth to a son of Holofernes; she sees that she has gone beyond the bounds, that she has at least done the right thing for unjust reasons.” (Friedrich Hebbel, diary entry from 1872). Reznicek also adopts this view. And even goes one step further, for his Judith is guided by self-doubt and contradictory emotions toward Holofernes.
Reznicek makes virtuoso and effective use of different musical styles, which are held together by a late romantic orchestral sound with expressionistic elements. Tonal sections stand alongside whole-tone scales, chromaticism, melismatics, bitonality and yes, even twelve-tone scales. Tonal features stand predominantly for the religious, the divine, chromatic and melismatic elements for Judith, the feminine and the Hebrews and whole-tone scales for Holofernes and the Assyrians. Richard Strauss and his Salome are omnipresent. Wagner, too, is not far away - which, however, does not detract from the whole, for poaching in foreign territories is not strange to any composer. And what Wagner needed many score pages for, Reznicek does on one page - for the Judith death scene he only needs 17 bars.

Handlung
Zeit: 1.
