Published in 1933, Alexander Tcherepnin’s op. 50 (Dance Russes) represented a moment in his life where the fabric of Stalinist Russia was changing in radical ways yet, seemingly serendipitously, he was out of reach of the Soviet machine. While the policy of ‘Socialist Realism’ was recently instituted, – its first titular identity arose in 1932 – its harbingers were already felt by the late-1920s via a tapestry of broad-ranging negations of foreign-born influence and celebration of Communist unity. Tcherepnin was lucky enough to avoid its influence right away. But, like Sergei Prokofiev, he was devising new forms of musical expression which seemed aligned with the Soviet spirit of accessibility.

In 1920s Paris, Tcherepnin was a contributing member of the ‘École de Paris,’ a multi-form compositional collective of emigres in early 1920s Paris whose aim was that of Modernist expressionism with emphasis on the myriad of styles of post-Impressionism and avant garde expressionism. This period produced notable works which leaned into modernist reinvention of traditional forms, namely Rhapsodie géorgienne (Op. 25), Sonata No. 1-3 for cello and piano (Op. 29, 30 1/2), and especially 12 Preludes, The Well-Tempered Cello (Op. 38). ..
