Preface
Georg Schumann, born in Königstein, Saxony, the second of 12 children of the city’s music director Clemens Schumann, received his first piano and violin lessons at home. A piano sonata – one of his first compositions – caught the attention of Carl Reinecke, who arranged for him to study at the Leipzig Conservatory. After completing his studies in 1887, Schumann worked as a conductor in Danzig, followed by a position in Bremen under Felix Weingartner. During this time, he had numerous encounters with important musicians such as Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms, Josef Joachim, Max Bruch and many others. In 1900, Schumann received the title of professor and took up the post of director of the Berlin Singakademie, which he headed for over half a century. Through his work with the Academy, he maintained close contact with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, which he frequently engaged for concerts at the academy. In the following years, he rose to become Vice-President of the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin, later its Acting President, and succeeded Max Bruch as head of its master school for composition. In addition to his work as a piano virtuoso, teacher and composer, Schumann was involved as a co-founder in the German Composers’ Cooperative, later GEMA, and became its honorary member. …
