Preface
Josef Rheinberger: A composer of the late 19th century whose work navigates the tension between traditional forms and a subtle, often underestimated art of expression. Born in Vaduz in 1839 and active for most of his life in Munich, he worked as a composer, organist, and teacher, leaving a lasting mark on musical life in southern Germany in particular While his sacred works have long been the focus of reception, his secular compositions in particular show a remarkable sensitivity to literary sources and their musical interpretation.
This affinity for poetry is particularly evident in his setting of Paul Heyse’s work. Heyse’s ballad “Das Thal des Espingo” combines scenic imagery with dramatic tension: the march of a Moorish army through the Pyrenees transforms, in a moment of apparent calm and nostalgia for home, into a scene of deadly menace. Rheinberger does not merely illustrate this constellation but transforms it into a multi-layered musical dramaturgy in which timbre, harmony, and motivic design are closely interwoven.
From the very beginning, the work establishes a characteristic underlying tension. A soft timpani roll forms the sonic backdrop, over which the bassoons and clarinets enter with solemn triplets and long sustained notes. These sound as if coming from afar, dragging along and marked by a certain heaviness—a musical image of movement that does not push forward, but rather appears solemn and laborious.
