Preface
A companion piece to Op. 65 (Twelve Easy Pieces for Piano), a collection of nostalgia-heavy programmatic pieces set apart from other sets by Romantics like Schumann and Tchaikovsky, op. 65bis (Summer Day) continued Prokofiev’s view of life from the child’s perspective. An orchestral reconceptualization of seven movements from op. 65 (1. Morning 2. Fifteen 3. Waltz 4. Repentance 5. March 6. Evening 7. The moon walks over the meadows), Prokofiev’s work came at a time in his career when his return to the USSR was not only formalized but permanent. Never again would he feel the energy of the emigre cosmopolitanism he’d grown accustomed to, yet neither would he indulge in compositional freedom but instead, in one way or another, feel the effects Sovietism had over the totality of artistic expression in the USSR. The base opus was composed in 1935, the year punctuated by two high-profile works, namely op. 63 (Violin Concerto No. 2) and op. 64 (Romeo and Juliet). …
