Preface
Music history unfolds continuously between the preservation of established forms and the aspiration towards renewal. Tradition transmits familiar genres, developed stylistic conventions and aesthetic continuity. Innovation seeks expanded expressive possibilities, new combinations of form, harmony and instrumentation. In a composer’s music these two forces attain a balance: biographical experiences, artistic exemplars and experimental impulses shape a personal profile in which the familiar and the new reciprocally interpenetrate.
Emanuel Moór moves distinctly within this field of tension. His music is deeply rooted in Central European late Romanticism and stands audibly in the succession of Brahms and Bruckner. He mastered the large forms of the genre with assurance and sovereignty. At the same time, Moór as organist and pianist was shaped by the interplay between elaborated compositions as well as spontaneous music-making at the instrument and the attendant experience of free playing.
