Preface
Otto Malling was a true resident of Copenhagen: when he was born on June 1, 1848, the son of a middle-class wholesaler, one could still encounter personalities like Hans Christian Andersen or Kierkegaard on the streets of the Danish capital. The family’s interest in music was strong from the very beginning. Otto’s father, Ludvig Malling, had become a member of the Copenhagen Music Society in its founding year, 1836. Furthermore, the eldest son, Jørgen, was a student of Niels Wilhelm Gade and on his way to becoming a composer. …
