Preface
Otto Malling was a true resident of Copenhagen: when he was born on June 1, 1848, the son of a middle-class wholesaler, one could still encounter personalities like Hans Christian Andersen or Kierkegaard on the streets of the Danish capital. The family’s interest in music was strong from the very beginning. Otto’s father, Ludvig Malling, had become a member of the Copenhagen Music Society in its founding year, 1836. Furthermore, the eldest son, Jørgen, was a student of Niels Wilhelm Gade and on his way to becoming a composer. He was certainly a role model for Otto, the youngest in the family, who had already become a member of a chamber music society while still a high school student, weho performed at the Sunday concerts in the Student Hall. Eventually, the desire was awakened to train as a conductor, composer, and organist. As early as 1868, the Overture in C minor, his first orchestral work, was performed. The reviews were positive, though it likely still lacked a bit of the necessary craftsmanship. In January 1869, Malling was finally able to begin a solid education and became a student at the music conservatory, which had been founded just two years earlier. Johann Peter Emilius Hartmann and Niels W. Gade, the defining figures of Danish musical life, were, alongside the young organist Gottfred Matthison-Hansen, his first teachers, who made a lasting impression on the aspiring musician.
