Franz Joseph Haydn numbers among the great composers of the Western classical tradition and is member of the so-called Viennese School, a famous triumvirate that includes W. A. Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven. Among these three iconic composers, Haydn and his music are arguably the least well-known, despite his massive oeuvre and undeniable impact on the development of the musical forms and styles of high Classicism. This is perhaps due in part to Haydn’s relatively unromantic, workaday life: in contrast to the money troubles, personal dramas, illnesses and itinerancies of Mozart and Beethoven, Haydn enjoyed status and stable employment in the service of Hungarian nobility—the Esterhazy family (at whose court he was affectionately known as “Papa Haydn”)—for many decades.
