Preface
Mikhail Mikhailovich Ippolitov-Ivanov was born on November 19, 1859 (Old Style) in Gatchina, near St. Petersburg, Russian Empire. Born Mikhail Ivanov, he was the son of a palace mechanic. In order to distinguish himself from an exact namesake and therefore avoid confusion with the “other” Mikhail Mikhailovich Ivanov (whose dates are 1849-1927), he later added “Ippolitov” to his name (his mother’s maiden name). This “other” Ivanov was a mostly unpublished composer and a music critic for the Novoye Vremya, (The New Times).
His first musical studies were at home. From 1872-1875 he attended classes at St. Isaac’s Cathedral in St. Petersburg while serving as a choirboy. In 1875 he entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory and studied the double bass. His teachers included Yuly Ivanovich Iogansen (1826-1904) for canon and fugue and Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) for orchestration. …
