Preface
Josef Bohuslav Foerster was born in the Hrzánský Palace in Prague. His birthplace is now commemorated with a memorial plaque. Members of the Foerster family had, for several generations, pursued careers in teaching, with music playing a central role in their lives. Foerster’s father served as choirmaster at St. Vitus Cathedral and as a teacher at the Prague Conservatory. His sacred music was also widely admired and performed. Josef’s brother, the composer Antonín Foerster had worked in Ljubljana and was regarded as the creator of the first Slovenian national opera. Antonín’s son, Anton Foerster worked as a pianist and teacher. The family’s artistic talents extended beyond music: Foerster’s brother Viktor Foerster was a visual artist, and Josef Bohuslav Foerster himself produced not only a substantial body of music but also works in painting and literature. …
