Berwald, Franz – Elfenspiel (Play of the Elves), Tongemälde für grosses Orchester

(b. Stockholm, 23 July 1796 – d. Stockholm, 3 April 1868)

Preface
Franz Berwald is one of the most peculiar figures in 19th-century European music history: a composer whose artistic significance is manifested not so much in his contemporary impact as in the striking delay with which it emerged. Born in Stockholm in 1796, he spent his life caught between artistic ambition and a lack of recognition. While he occasionally attracted interest abroad—particularly during his years in Vienna—he was largely denied lasting recognition in his Swedish homeland. It was only in the retrospective view of the late 19th and 20th centuries that the independence became apparent that today establishes him as a central figure in Swedish music history.

This delayed reception is closely linked to Berwald’s unusual life story. Although Berwald’s musical language is unmistakably rooted in the Romantic era, it adheres only partially to its conventional formal models. Instead of continuous development in the classical sense, his works are characterized by a freer handling of musical material. Motifs appear fragmentary, are juxtaposed, superimposed, or abruptly continued. This apparent discontinuity is less an expression of formal uncertainty than rather part of a specific aesthetic stance aimed at sonic imagination, contrast, and the immediate impact of musical gestures. …
