Preface
Dirk Schäfer was a Dutch pianist and composer: he began his piano studies in 1888 at the Rotterdam Music School and, continued it at the Cologne Conservatory under the guidance of Pauer and Wüllner; in 1892 he won the Mendelssohn Prize in Berlin. Schäfer gave numerous concerts in Germany, France, Austria and Belgium thanks to his fame as a sensitive and virtuoso artist at an international level: between 1913 and 1915 he spanned his repertoire from Byrd to Debussy and Schönberg; he also played many transcriptions of harpsichord works, including J. S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations and later specialized in Chopin.
As a composer Dirk Schäfer mainly devoted himself to writing for the piano, but also his two orchestral pieces (Suite pastorale op. 8, 1903; Rhapsodie javanaise op. 7, 1904) show skill in orchestration, discernment and finesse in a very personal style, typically romantic and influenced by Richard Strauss, Skrjabin, Chopin and Brahms: according to Eduard Reeser, Schäfer’s music is “exuberant and stylistically not free from strange imperfections”. He was also a theorist and teacher: published in 1942 by the widow Ida Schäfer-Dumstorff, the work Het klavier is considered the first Dutch teaching method. (Jos Wouters, edited by Leo Samama, in NG²).
Schäfer’s ouevre consists of a rich piano repertoire made up of short pieces, studies, scherzos, waltzes, improvisations, variations, suites, toccatas and interludes, composed from 1893 to 1929; he also wrote vocal music, in particular lieder at the beginning of his career, chamber music and the two orchestral works.
Suite pastorale op. 8
This work is a suite in E major for orchestra and solo piano, composed in 1903 with the stylistic features of late-romantic music. It is made up of four movements: Allegretto; Little Allegretto, almost Andantino; Mesto. Time of Valse; The final. Moderate. It was first performed in 1905 by conductor W. Mengelberg and the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
The Allegretto can be divided in three parts: an introduction, a first section “A” and a second section “B”. The introduction presents a first part in which the melody is played by the flutes, oboes and bassoons, to which English horn and clarinets are added, that create greater tension; in the second part, however, the strings intone the melody, dialoguing with the horns. The tension grows in a crescendo, and it ends with a bang of the timpani.
In section A, called Tranquillem. Assai, the melody is performed by the violins I supported by the strings, which in turn interact with the winds in a continuous crescendo as an echo, until the introduction theme is resumed; from bar 59 a more sustained rhythm of the strings and flutes, accompanied harmonically by the winds, introduces the new section.
In section B, A tempo, viola and cello play the melody, to which oboes, clarinets and violins are added that provide an echo, while the harp and flutes accompany gently with arpeggios and trills. A dialogue between violas and violins and winds follows: in this way a chordal part is introduced, again Tranquillem. Assai, in which clarinets, violas and cellos take up the varied initial theme. In a finale, consisting of chords in rallentando, the theme sung by flutes and bassoons is inserted for the last time: an arpeggio of the harp leads to the final chord.
The second movement, Poco Allegetto, quasi Andantino opens with the melody that is played by the clarinets and flutes, while the strings with a pizzicato are the accompaniment. A descending fragment of the clarinets introduces an intense, sweet and expressive chord section. In this chordal part the melody is performed by the flutes and violins I homorhythmically; this section ends with the intervention of the harp, while the theme continues to be exhibited by the strings, and the winds are the accompaniment. The passage of the theme continues between the various instruments until an increase in intensity and variety of timbre (bar 214). A pizzicato concludes this crescendo (bar 232), while the clarinets take up the theme together with the viola with a ritenuto; the other instruments support by playing chords.
The third movement, Mesto, Tempo di Valse is made up of an ABAC structure. Part A presents the contrast between a tied and dilated melody that is played by the oboes, clarinets, viola and English horn, contrasted by a plucked and staccato chord accompaniment. This first part in turn is divided into two parts: the second does no longer limit itself to a single staccato rhythm as accompaniment, but also adds ascending and descending fragments, while the melody is entrusted to the strings.
Subsequently, part B (bar 312) takes over: it is introduced by English horn and bassoons, the melody of which is then taken up by the oboe. The flute introduces a triplet fragment, imitated by the block of the strings, while flutes and clarinets are free to express themselves with ascending and descending trills and scales. Towards the end, the staccato and pizzicato trend is repeated to reintroduce part A.
In section C (bar 405) the thematic material of part B is combined with the thematic material of part A, until an ostinato of harp and cello cools the tension and leads to the final chord of the movement.
The Finale, Moderato (bar 451) opens with an introduction in which contrabass and cello act as a drone, and during which a descending theme is presented by horns I and II, then played repetitively with a crescendo and a stringendo by the flutes, from oboes and clarinets; horns III and IV move in an opposite way with an upward movement.
The violins and the viola act as a support by increasing the tension with the same descending fragment but with the tremolo. An allegro maestoso moment follows, leading to a larger and dilated second part, in which the instruments continue to play the theme in turn. Tubas, cellos and contrabasses in turn propose the descending fragment, until reaching a more playful section: With an increase in intensity, the winds come to the fore. The point of return is always the descending fragment from the beginning within a continuous dialogue: it is possible to understand that this is the end of the suite when listening to the theme echoing from the first movement (bar 535) played by the horns I and II, again interrupted by the playful theme. The latter ends with a chord section that reaches fortissimo, in which the English horn and clarinets gently recall the original theme, and then conclude with the final chord (ritenuto, lento and adagio).
The suite offers rich thematic material that moves beyond the boundaries of the individual movements to create a musical continuum, a dialogue between the different instruments: Thus, recollection is the dominant aspect of the work, so there is no need to work with too many elements, as the wealth lies in the dynamics, the variety of timbre, and in the reworking of the material. The structure is clear and defined, within which Schäfer has the opportunity to experiment, approaching the late-romantic current: the Suite, in fact, has a dreamy character, contrasting effects and dissonances; moreover, listening to it seems to anticipate the sound of film music.

Vorwort
Im Abschnitt A, Tranquillem.
Danach folgt Teil B (Takt 312).
