Edward Elgar - Sérénade Lyrique
(b. 2 June 1857, Broadheath, Worcestershire - d. 23 February 1934, Worcester)
Mélodie for small orchestra
Elgar wrote this in 1899 for Ivan Carroll’s Orchestra, a popular light orchestra of the time. Very little is known of its genesis, although it seems to have originally been for violin and piano. It is quite possible that it is an older piece that Elgar ‘revived’ after the success of the Enigma Variations, which had its premiere in June 1899. He wrote, or at least scored, Chanson de Nuit and Chanson de Matin at the same time.
Its first performance was on 27 November 1899 in St. James’s Hall, Piccadilly, by the orchestra led by Ivan Carroll. Elgar did not attend. However, he recorded it in 1929 for HMV.

Edward Elgar - Sérénade Lyrique
(geb. 2. Juni 1857, Broadheath, Worcestershire - gest. 23. Februar 1934, Worcester)
