Preface
Franz Xaver Schnyder von Wartensee was born on April 15, 1786, in Lucerne, Switzerland. Schnyder learned to play the violin from an early age and to play the piano at the age of 16. His talent on many instruments stood out in the Association of Swiss Musicians and he began studies in composition with Hans Georg Nägeli in Zurich, where he later continued to study theory and composition with Joseph Gersbach. With these achievements, Schnyder moved to Vienna in the hopes of studying composition with Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven agreed to examine on his compositions but did not accept him as his student, and so Schnyder turned to harmonies and counterpoint under the tutelage of Johann Christoph Kienlen. During his stay in Vienna, Schnyder integrated himself into society and the musical scene of Vienna, where he befriended Carl Czerny. After a devastating fire destroyed all his possessions, including his compositions and instruments, Schnyder returned to Switzerland in 1812 and accepted the position as singing teacher at Pestalozzi’s Pedagogic Institute. He founded the Frankfurter Liederkranz in 1828. In 1848 he returned to Frankfurt, where he died on August 27, 1868. Schnyder was an influential composer in the nineteenth-century, and his symphonies only make up a small fraction of his compositional output. ..
