Preface
Friedrich Kiel was a German composer and music teacher during the Romantic era. Today almost forgotten, he was then known for his intricate chamber music, choral works and for his contributions to musical education. Highly respected for his mastery of counterpoint and formal structure, he composed music in all genres except symphony and opera.
Kiel was born in Bad Laasphe, Puderbach, a district of Neuwied, where he showed early musical talent. He was mostly self-taught and could be considered somewhat of a prodigy having composed much music by the time he was 13 years old. One year later, he caught the attention of composer Prince Albrecht of Prussia who arranged for his formal musical training. Under the Prince’s watchful eye, the boy studied violin and music theory. By age 18, Kiel was not only the court conductor but also the music teacher for the Prince’s own children. …
