COMMENTARYIf publisher Robert Bremner (c.1713–1789) hadmaintained a list of “Greatest Hits” from hisPeriodical Overture series, Periodical Overture No.14 by Niccolò Jommelli (1714–1774) might wellhave been at the top of the tally. Besides enjoyingperformances for decades, it was published numeroustimes in keyboard transcriptions. Its second movement also launched an English fad for orchestralchaconnes.1 Surprisingly, though, this was the onlytime that Jommelli was represented in Bremner’stwenty-year set.Jommelli was a particularly well-travelledcomposer by mid-eighteenth-century standards.
