Today, Max Bruch is considered one of the forgotten composers—a stark contrast to his popularity during the second half of the 19th century, when he was regarded as “one of the most important and versatile composers of the present day.”¹ However, one of his numerous works, the Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op. 26, has remained part of the select canon of its genre into the 21st century. It is an integral part of the repertoire of the great violin virtuosos of both past and present, standing alongside the violin concertos of Ludwig van Beethoven, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, and Johannes Brahms.
