The first publication of the Liebeslieder. Walzer für das Pianoforte zu vier Händen (und Gesang ad libitum) op. 52 dates from 1869.1 In the same year, the first ten Ungarische Tänze für das Pianoforte zu vier Händen WoO and the following year the Rhapsodie für eine Alt-Stimme, Männerchor und Orchester op. 53 were published, all three works being released by Brahms’s publishing house Simrock in Berlin.2 Brahms also experienced a breakthrough as a widely recognized composer at this time with the premiere or first performances of the Deutsches Requiem op. 45.3 The present edition of the Liebeslieder. Neun Walzer aus Op. 52 und 65 for voice and orchestra represents a se- lection of nine songs from the original version for voice and four-hand piano of the first cycle of the Liebeslie- der-Walzer op. 52 and the further cycle under the title Neue Liebeslieder.
