Børresen came from a successful merchant family and received early lessons in piano, violin, cello, and music theory. As his father demanded a competent judgement of his son’s musical abilities, Børresen presented himself in 1895 to Johann Svendsen, a Norwegian composer and conductor who had been Kapellmeister at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen since 1883. Svendsen became Børresen’s teacher and taught him until 1901, the year his first symphony was performed. For this work, he was awarded the Ancker Grant, a travel scholarship that allowed him to study in Germany, France, and Belgium. In 1902, Børresen settled in Copenhagen, where he worked as a freelance composer. From 1924 to 1949, he was chairman of the Danish Composers’ Association and thus one of the most respected figures in Danish musical life. His Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in G major op.11 was premiered in 1902, becoming one of his most popular works. …
