Musically and lyrically newly arranged for the German stage by Hans Pfitzner One of the many perversities of our time, which can be observed in every field, is the strange phenomenon in art that newly emerging artistic products are generally rejected unless they are problematic in some way. Unproblematic, self-contained, non-experimental products that have grown well on the soil of old culture are of no interest and are not appreciated. They are not taken seriously. On the other hand, the same era and the same people who establish the above criterion as a new norm take pleasure in digging up long-dead products, which were perhaps so thoroughly forgotten because they were already too unproblematic for previous generations. More valuable things from the old days also come to light, but only if they are particularly characterised by their conspicuous lack of problems, their unity, their genre, their schematic form. …
